So successful was American-owned AmaWaterways’ AmaPrima, when she joined the fleet in 2013, that she was swiftly joined by her younger sister, the AmaSerena in 2015. This still-pristine 164-passenger river cruiser, with her cutting edge design, panoramic views and upmarket modern interiors sails luxury all-inclusive itineraries on the Rhine, Danube and other iconic European rivers.
A large number of AmaSerena’s passengers are a home crowd of North American passengers who tend to be mature, well-travelled and interested in immersing themselves in the culture and history of the itinerary. She also attracts British and other English-speaking guests who appreciate her upmarket feel and fantastic passenger to crew ratio of nearly three to one.
Cuisine is taken seriously onboard AmaSerena, with menus prepared by skilled chefs who are members of gastronomic society La Chaine des Rotisseurs and use the seasons and the itineraries to inspire their menus.
The stylish and contemporary main restaurant on the Cello Deck plays host to the three main meals of the day. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style with the option to order freshly-cooked dishes too. An open-seating policy operates at the nightly multi-course dinner, however the smart casual dress code gives a more formal feel than on most river cruises, with most passengers choosing to dress up even more for Captain’s dinners.
For a special treat, passengers can book at a table at the intimate Chef’s Table restaurant at the back of the Violin Deck and enjoy watching the evening’s delicacies being prepared in front of them as well as the view. At the front of this deck, passengers can have a more casual but equally enjoyable dining experience at the Al Fresco Dining Terrace.
The Main Lounge & Bar provides early riser breakfasts, casual lunches and afternoon snacks. Speciality tea and coffee are always available and wine, beer and soft drinks are unlimited at lunch and dinner. There’s even the chance to start the day with a glass of sparkling wine at breakfast.
Passengers can enjoy complimentary first-run Hollywood films, Wi-Fi, English-speaking TV and music in the comfort of their cabin with AmaWaterway’s cutting edge Entertainment on Demand system.
The Main Lounge & Bar has an adjoining Observation Lounge, resident pianist and dancefloor. Local performers are regularly invited onboard to entertain passengers in the evenings.
The Captain’s welcome dinner has a big night out feel and gets every cruise off to a sociable start.
The Sun Deck, with its heated pool with swim up bar, retractable roof, comfortable lounge chairs and walking track is a wonderful place to get active or watch the world go by. Alternatively, passengers can get lost in a book in the Fireside Library. There is also a gift shop.
AmaWaterways’ Small Group Excursions means sightseeing is tailor-made for passengers’ needs. Gentle Walkers allows guests to explore at a relaxed pace, Active Walkers covers more ground and Late Starters factors a lie-in into the day’s schedule. All associated costs are taken care of, headsets are provided and the English-speaking guides are handpicked according to AmaWaterways’ high standards. Optional extras include opportunities to attend events like a Strauss and Mozart concert or explore by bicycle.
All AmaSerena’s staterooms and suites are outside, spacious and feature stylish contemporary décor. Safe, mini bar, hairdryer, phone, flat-screen TV, wardrobe, writing desk, full-length mirror, seating area and individual climate control come as standard in all cabins and bottled water is replenished daily.
