APT River Cruises

  • Overview

Australian Pacific Touring (APT) has come a long way since it was first founded. Family owned and operated, this globally-renowned travel company has been providing exciting travel options since the 1960s, with company owner, Geoff McGeary, expanding its scope, year after year. While it also offers ocean cruises and land expeditions, river cruises is where APT really stands out.
Its successful partnership with AmaWaterways ensures pioneering, modern river cruising, with cuisine, enrichment programmes and décor that reflect the elegance and sophistication that you’d expect from a floating boutique hotel. Combine this partnership with those provided by its Travelmarvel brand and APT ensures that river cruises are available to all. All inclusive travel, including onboard meals, complimentary drinks, shore excursions, transfers and gratuities, is the name of the game, with no hidden charges and complete transparency so that you know exactly what you’re paying for.

There are several different types of river cruise available through APT, offering unique features and impressive inclusions. The Royal Collection features APT-exclusive extras and enhancements on specific AmaWaterways vessels - or guests have the option to book onto any of the AmaWaterways river cruises that don’t benefit from these signature experiences (but still have plenty of enticing features)
The majority of the 23-vessel APT fleet sails in mainland Europe, but other charters are available, including cruises along the Mekong (AmaLotus), the Yangtze (Yangtzi Explorer), the Irrawaddy (RV Samatha, as of 2016), the Ganges (Ganges Explorer), and you can even cruise the Mississippi between New Orleans and Memphis on an authentic paddlewheeler! The Travelmarvel partner brand also offers a further seven ships to ensure guests have as much choice as possible, with ships operating as far as Burma and Cambodia.

As with most other river cruises, passengers onboard APT ships tend to be well-travelled, well-educated and affluent. The majority of travellers are typically Australian, but guests from New Zealand and the UK love these cruises too. All staff members speak English and everything is marketed in English, so there’s no need for the phrasebook onboard!
The maximum capacity across the APT fleet is 164, and high staff to guest ratios ensure impeccable 5* service throughout the journey, including an onboard Cruise Director to ensure your experience is the very best it can be.

Gourmet cuisine comes as standard onboard APT vessels, particular its AmaWaterways fleet which boasts membership of the International Gastronomic Society La Chaine de Rotisseurs. There’s a choice of dining venues on most ships, including the newer boats from AmaBella onwards. The open-seating main dining venue is elegant and sophisticated, but if you’re looking for something even more indulgent, the Chef’s Table restaurant and tasting menus are also available.
Expect regional menus, created with the finest, local produce. Complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks are available with lunch and dinner, and throughout the day on some itineraries. Bottled water, tea and coffee are also readily available, at no extra charge.

Onboard lectures and presentations are often included, to help guests to fully immerse themselves in the local heritage and culture. Passengers can enjoy specialist evening entertainment, which can vary depending on the itinerary you choose – from local musicians to impressive European dancers. You could even enjoy a traditional puppet show as you travel through Burma! Alternatively, crew-led performances, quiz nights and dancefloors will keep guests entertained.
Guests will also have the use of at least one air-conditioned lounge with full bar service – perfect for a pre- or post- dinner drink with existing and new found friends.

As part of the partnership with AmaWaterways, APT guests will benefit from an enrichment programme, which includes a fantastic choice of shore excursions - including guided tours and walks to suit all fitness levels. Tours include audio devices so that guests can learn about the local history and culture with ease. There are also bicycles onboard that can be used in ports, free of charge.
APT’s Royal Collection also boasts Signature Experiences, which are exclusive to APT guests and offer unique sightseeing opportunities, private tours of castles and Buddhist temples, private classical concerts in Vienna and decadent rail journeys aboard the Majestic Imperator.

The ten Concerto Class ships (from AmaBella onwards) have introduced the revolutionary Twin Balcony concept to most suites, which offer guests a choice of sit-on balcony and French balcony.  The six Aria Class ships (AmaDagio, AmaLegro, AmaCello, AmaDante, AmaLyra and AmaDolce) offer a choice of private ‘Panoramic Balconies’ or twin window staterooms and luxurious suites.
All rooms and suites are beautifully decorated and provide all of the best mod-cons to ensure a comfortable voyage, including plush bathrobes and premium linens. All rooms have TVs kitted out with infotainment systems that offer a selection of music, shows and movies, as well as free internet access as standard.

There are sun decks and terraces fleet-wide, where you can relax and admire the landscapes when the weather allows it. Alternatively, unwind in the spa (ship-dependent) and treat yourself to a specialist massage or treatment. There may also be a hair and beauty salon and fitness centre onboard, and pools are also found on some newer ships – some have swim up bars, too!

The majority of APT river cruise itineraries focus on the breathtaking rivers of Europe, with extended stays on land also possible. Many trips are inclusive of air fares and transfers if departing from the UK. Typically, voyages are for between 7 and 14 nights, with shorter breaks (as little as 4 nights) and extended voyages (up to a month) also available on more exotic itineraries.
Whether you choose to glide along the majestic rivers of Europe, from a cultural trip along the Danube to a romantic cruise through Paris on the Seine, or you would prefer to head off on a far-flung adventure, cruising down the Mekong, Irrawaddy or Ganges – or fancy exploring Southern USA from a Mississippi paddlewheeler - APT River Cruises are certain to have a 5* voyage aboard a ‘boutique floating hotel’ that ticks all the boxes.
