Cruising to Costa Maya (Majahual), Mexico

It turns out the world didn't end in 2012 as the Mayans allegedly predicted, which means exploring some of the ruins left behind by this fascinating civilisation is still the closest you're likely to get to experiencing a post-apocalyptic scenario - and you'll find plenty of intriguing and historic sites in the Costa Maya.

Located to the south of Cancun, the Costa Maya is centred around the port of Mahuahual - a place that was once a sleepy village but these days has plenty of excellent restaurants, handicraft shops and other amenities to offer tourists.

Among the top attractions here are of course the ruins themselves, with ancient Mayan sites such as Ichkabal, Chacchoben and Kohunlich being some of the most interesting in the region. Exploring the pyramids, temples and other structures as they jut out of the rainforests that flank the gorgeous beaches of the Costa Maya really will make you feel like Indiana Jones, although if all this sounds a little too adventurous then you can always just relax on the white sand while sipping on a coconut full of rum and taking the occasional dip in the turquoise Caribbean Sea.
