Cunard Cruise Lines More Information

Planetcruise Winner of the 2009 Cunard. Greatest Percentage Growth South award from UK Cruise Awards 2009

Cunard provide more traditional transatlantic voyages and longer cruises in traditional, elegant and spacious surroundings, supported by excellent levels of personal service.

The Cunard Line has a long and illustrious history and tradition, founded in 1840 by Samuel Cunard, a businessman from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the late 1920's Cunard lay down plans for a pair of liners that would be capable of maintaining the weekly service between Southampton and New York. The merged Cunard-White Star Line launched the Queen Mary in 1935 and Queen Elizabeth in 1939.

Almost 70 years later and the names of these two Queens still remain, providing the current Cunard fleet in the form of the Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Mary II. The year 2004 was a momentous year in the history of Cunard. The Queen Mary 2 - the largest, longest, highest, and most expensive ship ever built - was christened by The Queen and made her maiden voyage taking over the transatlantic service between Southampton and New York and became the flagship of Cunard Line.

Only one name evokes the pleasures of a golden era and that name is Cunard, with many firsts over its unique and illustrious history; the QE2 was the first ship (and still the only ship) to sail 5 million nautical miles and the QM2 is the first merchant vessel to be launched by a member of the Royal family (Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II). The QE2 continues to operate her annual world cruise and the number of those deciding to take the full voyage continues to rise. She also sails a variety of round-trip Southampton voyages.

Towards the end of 2007, a third queen will be added to the Cunard fleet when the Queen Victoria enters service. The ultimate luxury cruise, designed to accommodate 2,000 guests, she will combine all the traditional values and style associated with Cunard. By way of example, she will boast Queen and Princess Grills fine-dining and suite accommodation to match, an impressive double height Queen’s Ballroom, a two tiered library connected by a stylish spiral staircase, a conservatory style glass-roofed winter garden, a Cunard museum and, of course, sumptuous, traditional style décor throughout. All underpinned by the impeccable White Star Service.

The legendary Cunard experience and heritage is built around exceeding your expectations becoming the byword for comfort, style and luxury, providing arguably the ultimate travel experience.
