Silversea5* Berlitz Rating

In the early 1990s, the Lefebvre family of Rome, former owners of Sitmar Cruises, conceived and organized a unique cruise company pledging to build and operate the highest quality ships in the ultra-luxury segment. The name "Silversea" was chosen because it connotes quality and luxury as well as capturing the romance and special sensations of the sea.

Many cruise experts place Silversea at the top of the luxury category. Though other luxury lines might frown, it is hard to argue with Silversea's reputation. Once known as the most expensive cruise line in the world, today it tends to be more competitive within the luxury cruise category.

Since its inception Silversea continues to offer its guests the concept of not a cruise but an experience. They consider their cruises “The art of travel. The art of good living” and were the cruise line who introduced the onboard concierge who could arrange anything for you.

Silversea have four ships. These are two pairs of sisters; Silver Cloud and Silver Wind are the older and smaller, while Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper are the two newer but larger ships. Silver Cloud was launched in 1994 followed closely in 1995 by Silver Wind. In the Berlitz “Complete Guide to Cruising 2007” the Silver Cloud is considered to be the second top rated ship, with Silver Wind in fourth. Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper both make the top 15. This emphasizes that the company is continuing to offer its guests what they want. Luxury!

All Silversea staterooms are suites, three-quarters having their own verandas, and all are sumptuously appointed. All gratuities and beverages, including select wines, champagnes and spirits, are included in the price.

The "Personalized Voyages" program was introduced in 2003, allowing passengers to design their own itinerary and vacation experience by electing to embark and disembark on any days they choose. Guests can select voyages that are any length of five days or longer. Guests are charged a daily rate whether they book 5 days or 55 plus days dependent on the ports and the stateroom category chosen.

Reacting to the needs of their clients, Silversea have expanded Internet and WiFi capabilities and have recently launched a service that allows guests to use their cell phones and PDA devices while at sea.
