Discover Egypt

UK-based Discover Egypt is an established expert on all things Egyptian. As well as operating classic Nile cruises, it also offers tours in Jordan and Israel, making it unique among river cruise lines. Many of its itineraries combine Nile cruises with a hotel stay in Luxor, Cairo or the popular Red Sea resorts.

A Nile cruise on one of the luxury ships chartered by Discover Egypt is an unforgettable way to immerse yourself in the world of the pharaohs and pyramids. As well as priding itself on its 5-star ships and impeccable service, Discover Egypt also takes the history and culture of the Nile seriously, with a resident Egyptologist on each cruise to guide you through the minimum of 10 excursions on every itinerary, and answer any questions you may have onboard.

Resort transfers, airport taxes, luggage allowance and almost all excursion costs are included in the cost of your holiday, making it easy to unwind as soon as you begin your Nile Cruise.

Discover Egypt offers river cruises on a variety of different styles and sizes of ship, including the 68-cabin Royal Viking and the 49-cabin Viking Princess from the Viking River Cruises fleet. A 14-night itinerary is available on the 72-cabin MS Hamees, which is part of the Movenpick family of river cruise ships. Sonesta Star Goddess is an intimate, luxurious all-suite ship with 33 cabins. Alexander the Great also offers a stylish, floating boutique hotel atmosphere, and the smallest ship, the Oberoi Sahara, has just 25 cabins making for an exclusive yet friendly vibe onboard.

Although the ships come from different builders they are all designed to navigate the Nile and are handpicked by Discover Egypt to meet its high standards of comfort and style.

Discover Egypt is very popular with well-travelled couples and friends who are keen to go beyond the basics and learn about the fascinating history of this part of the world as they soak up the sun in style on their river cruise. Single travellers should watch out for Discover Egypt’s occasional ‘no single supplement’ offers on selected cruises.

Every Discover Egypt ship has a main restaurant where delicious breakfast and lunch buffets and a la carte dinners are served in stylish surroundings, with a good mix of local delicacies and familiar favourites. Drinks packages are available to purchase.

All ships have a lounge bar where you can relax with a drink as you watch the world go by and most also have a bar on the Sun Deck. Some ships even have a BBQ on the Sun Deck, where you can enjoy oriental food and music as the sun goes down. Room service is also available on most Discover Egypt ships, and you can enjoy nice touches like being welcomed back from your day’s excursion with warm towels and a glass of apple tea.

Discover Egypt has a good evening entertainment programme with local belly dancers and whirling dervishes regularly appearing. The welcome cocktail party is a great ice-breaker, and there’s also a Galabeya party where everyone dresses up in traditional Egyptian costumes for dinner and party games. While the atmosphere is friendly and sociable, most people don’t tend to stay up too late as there is usually an early start for sightseeing the next day.

Some ships have libraries and games rooms onboard, but most passengers are happy to unwind on the Sun Deck or in the bar after a day’s sightseeing.

Off the ship, from the temples of Luxor to the Valley of the Kings, you’ll be expertly guided through this fascinating ancient world by your ship’s friendly, knowledgeable Egyptologist.

The ships’ Sun Decks all have a splash pool to cool down in. Some ships have sauna and massage facilities, or even dedicated spas and fitness centres to work out or unwind in. Alexander the Great has its own traditional Turkish bath!

Cabins are a good size across the fleet, with luxurious décor with an oriental touch being a common theme. Hairdryers, phones, mini bars, satellite TV, air conditioning and safes comes as standard. All cabins are exterior with great views of the stunning scenery. The all-suite Sonesta Star Goddess’s luxurious cabins all have private terraces and full size bath tubs in the bathrooms, giving a fantastic feeling of space and luxury.

The 7-night Nile Cruise itinerary is extremely popular, however many people choose to extend their Nile cruise to a 10-night holiday incorporating a stay in Cairo to see the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the treasures of Tutankhamun. Or you can even stay for 14 nights and round off your holiday with a stay on the postcard-perfect beaches of the Red Sea Riviera.
