P&O Iona’s First Destination: The Norwegian Fjords

10 Aug 2018 | by Helen Williams

As we eagerly anticipate more information about P&O Cruises’ newest cruise ship, Iona, we are delighted to have found out about her first itineraries. Her inaugural season – spring/summer 2020 – will be spent in the beautiful Norwegian Fjords. Such a diverse destination is absolutely ideal for family-friendly P&O, read on to find out why.

The adventures waiting to be had in Norway

The Norwegian Fjords are like a giant playground, offering the ideal setting for a variety of exciting activities and adventures. With P&O Iona cruisers will get the opportunity to take part in some thrilling excursions such as:

  • Nordic Walking and Hiking
  • Kayaking
  • River-Rafting
  • Kayaking
  • Cycling

  • No matter if you’re looking for a more gentle experience or an adrenaline rush; there are many options which enable you to see and appreciate the raw beauty of the country.

    Norway’s fascinating history

P&O Iona will visit ports including Stavanger, Bergen, Olden, Geiranger, and Ålesund, each of which can educate visitors on different elements of Norway’s rich history. Viking lore comes alive in the city of Stavanger, close to where the Kingdom of Norway was founded by King Harald Hårfagre, in 872. Museums here help you to get to know more about the traditions and lifestyles of the Viking people.

Bergen is another great spot for history lovers, as it’s the home of Bryggen wharf which was integral in Medieval Europe. Between around the mid-1300s and mid-1500s, Bryggen became an important trade port in the German trading confederation – the Hanseatic League. Today you can learn more about this part of history in the museums, before heading to chic coffee shops and restaurants.

There is some incredible food in Norway

    The country is becoming increasingly recognised for its culinary brilliance, as is most of Scandinavia for that matter. Dishes are intricately designed and yet simple when it comes to ingredients. While on a cruise in the Norwegian Fjords there are some delicacies you absolutely must try;

  • Smørbrød. This open sandwich is comprised of a piece of rye bread with a tasty topping such as cold meat, eggs, salmon, or cheese.
  • Crayfish. If visiting in August you’ll be lucky enough to sample some tasty crayfish, which is in abundance at this time of year.
  • Brunost. Among various Nordic cheeses is this interesting creation. It’s sweet-tasting and made with both cow’s and goat’s milk.
  • Skillingsbolle. A kind of cinnamon bun, this sweet treat is heavenly especially when washed down with a coffee in a local café.
  • The Norwegian Fjord Scenery is Outstanding

Each and every vista you will encounter on a cruise in the Norwegian Fjords will be one you’ll want to capture with your camera. Simply cruising past the glassy waters and peaceful mountains of the fjords each day will instil a feeling of calm. In addition to the ports mentioned, with Iona, you’ll cruise past the likes of Sunnylvsfjorden - a hotspot for wildlife, Nordfjord – home to commanding glaciers and waterfalls, and Innvikfjorden – which is surrounded by luscious greenery.

Even when you’re not sailing you’ll have plenty of chances to enjoy the views that Norway has to offer. There will be opportunities for light aircraft or helicopter rides, and cable car and funicular journeys. It goes without saying that each of these will offer some wonderful vantage points looking out over the mountains and valleys below.
