Cruising through
Fjords & Norway

Cruising in the Norwegian Fjords gives an intimate insight into one of the world’s most stunning and unspoilt regions. With many areas designated as UNESCO world heritage sites for their outstanding beauty, the Fjords are dramatic, breath-taking and bursting with wildlife.

Steep granite cliffs, waterfalls and icy waters inspire awe and wonder in cruisers to this region. Small Nordic villages with pretty colourfully painted houses nestle along the coastline of vast deep and mysterious lakes and inlets. The Fjords are a photographer’s dream with great prehistoric glaciers, pristine green coated mountainsides and snow tipped peaks and it is unsurprising that this is the most popular destination for UK cruisers to visit. Some of the best known ports of call on a Norwegian Fjords cruise are Bergen, Geiranger, Alesund and Edfjord but the list of beauty spots along the coast of Norway is endless.

There are so many reasons to visit the Fjords, not least the incredible scenery of the destination, but another bonus is that several the cruises are no-fly cruising from Southampton. You can avoid the stress of airports and the hassle of unspeakably early starts and instead cruise from your nearest port in the UK straight to the pristine waters of the Fjords. You can get away for a mini cruise, a week or even two weeks depending on your own wishes. A longer cruise will enable you to travel the length of Norway and even up to Greenland. The further north you sail toward the Arctic Circle the more likely you are to witness the glory of the Northern Lights. If you head for mid-summer you will experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun when the sun hardly sets and you’re bathed in sunshine around the clock.

Most of the main cruise lines offer the Norwegian Fjords as a destination but for a really immersive experience try Hurtigruten who offer cruises on board working postal ships, stopping at many tiny ports off the beaten track to deliver goods along the way. P&O Cruises, Cunard, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Fred.Olsen and Holland America Line all offer the Fjords, as do the ultra-luxury cruise lines too.

Springtime and early summer are a wonderful time to visit the Fjords and the days are longest but the Fjords are a year round destination with each season offering a different vista. Autumn brings a fabulous array of reds and golds as the leaves turn and harvest time yields up a bounty of tasty apples, pears and plums. Winter time sees the mountains covered in snow and Christmas is a festive and pretty time to visit Scandinavia. For cruises further afield Baltic Cruises are also very popular.
