Cruising to Florence, Italy

The birthplace of the Renaissance

Most people would agree that the world we live in today is a pretty sophisticated place, with discovery and creation helping to drive civilisation forwards. However, this wasn't always the case, and if it weren't for the city of Florence, we would still be stuck in the Dark Ages.

That's because this stunning city in the heart of Tuscany provided the spark for the Renaissance - or the Age of Enlightenment, as it's sometimes called - with notable Florentines like Botticelli, Donatello and the original Renaissance man himself Leonardo da Vinci helping to pioneer new ways of thinking, living and creating.

Florence soon became the artistic, scientific, political and philosophical centre of the universe, giving rise to many of the finer things in life - such as opera, modern political science and several strands of classical art.

To help visitors explore all of this, the city of Florence is these days home to a huge number of incredible museums and art galleries. Among the most famous is the Accademia di Belle Arte Firenze, which boasts Michelangelo's David as the jewel in its crown. Elsewhere, the Galleria degli Uffizi is arguably the world's most famous and prestigious art gallery, which contains 45 rooms, each of which is dedicated to a particular theme or artist. Among those to have their own room here are the likes or Caravaggio and da Vinci.

In case you feel the need to get even closer to the great thinkers, painters and sculptors of Florence's past, the Santa Croce Basilica is home to the tombs of Dante, Galileo Michelangelo and others.

With the city being such a melting pot of sophistication, it stands to reason that it should also boast some of the world's finest restaurants - after all, it takes some highly refined fuel to power the minds of the greatest geniuses ever to have lived. So, if you're looking for physical sustenance that's as impressive as the mental nourishment on offer throughout the city, the triple Michelin-starred Enoteca Pinchiorri is a pretty good place to start.
