A traveller's dream
Hualien is one of those locations that has it all - attractions, good accommodation and an exciting gastronomic scene. It's no wonder many of Taiwan's tourists end up here at some point during their trip.
The reasons to visit Hualien are numerous. Many people spend one or two days here in order to visit the Taroko Gorge, which is famed for its impressive canyon that measures 19km.
However, there's plenty to see within the city itself, including the Abode of Still Thoughts temple, the Yenpin Prefectural Temple and the Hualien County Stone Sculpture Museum. Sun worshippers won't feel out of place as there is the spectacular Qixingtan Beach to enjoy.
Shopping wise, Hualien is an excellent location to pick up woven cloth with traditional designs originating from the region. It's also worth trying the glutinous rice dishes, flavoured with sweet sesame paste, coconut and fruit dishes that are so popular here.
