Hue is a deeply complex place and it's difficult to understand it in a short space of time. There's no real bar scene and the locals are generally in bed by 10pm, so most of the enjoyment comes from witnessing the many temples, pagodas and ancient sites that make up most of the tourist scene.
Must-visit locations include the century-old Citadel walls, the Thien Mu Pagoda, the Imperial City and the Tomb of Khai Dinh. It's also worth checking out the cuisine - Vietnamese noodle soup is particularly common. It's known as pho and you can get all sorts of varieties.
