Cruising in Egypt

World cruises regularly visit Egypt, but with many Mediterranean sailings now visiting it, cruising to Egypt is now one of the easiest and best ways to see the country that is soaked in culture. With ports such as Alexandria, Port Said, Sharm El-Sheikh and Safaga, there are plenty of options.

It can be relatively inexpensive to cruise to Egypt, with lines such as Cunard offering trips from Southampton. Other fly-cruise options include Costa Cruises, MSC, Silversea, Seabourn, Princess and Crystal.

Port Said

  • Port Said has long been established as the “gateway to the east” for cruisers sailing down the Suez Canal. It’s extremely popular with locals for the duty free stalls, and is nearby to Cairo, home of the famous pyramids of Giza, along with Tutankhamen’s treasures.

Alexandria

  • Alexandria is considered one of the most important ports in Egypt, along with being the second most important city. Larger vessels can’t visit the “Pearl of the Mediterranean”, but smaller ships can witness the now modern, hustle and bustle of this ancient city. Saunter along Corniche, a long stretch of beach connected to a strip of restaurants, coffee shops, and a popular fish market.

Safaga

  • Located on the coast of the popular Red Sea resorts is Safaga. It is the best port for visiting Luxor, a city enriched in culture. Here, you can expect to visit the Valley of Kings, Tombs of the Nobles, the Temple of Montu, plus much more.

Sharm El-Sheikh

  • If you like beaches, you will love the popular tourist spot of Sharm El-Sheikh. Visit the souk, an open-air marketplace, popular with people wanting to barter down local spices and perfumes. The Bedouins sell pottery and jewellery here too. Nearby Naama Bay has 250 coral reefs, so is great for people interesting in snorkeling and diving with some of the most exotic fish in the world. Interested in understanding the religious heritage of Egypt? St. Catherine’s Monastery at the bottom of Mr. Sinai is very impressive, and is home to the burning bush – an important spiritual hotspot for Christians around the globe. Along with this, there is a whole host of bars and restaurants around the Sharm El-Sheikh.
