Cruising to Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

Forget London 2012 or Rio 2016, the only place to head to for a true taste of Olympic glory is Olympia, as it's here that the very first Games were held all the way back in 776 BC. Of course, in those days, the events were pretty different to the ones that are typically contested today, and all athletes had to compete in the nude!

The archaeological site of Ancient Olympia lies next to the modern city of the same name, which is about 25 km from the port of Katakolon, where your cruise ship will dock. Once at the site, you'll find loads of amazing historic buildings and relics to discover, including the Temple of Hera, where the original Olympic Torch has remained lit ever since its creation in the 7th century BC.

Indeed, most of the buildings located in Ancient Olympia were once temples to the gods that ruled Ancient Greece, with the one major exception being the Olympic Stadium itself. Walking around the wonderfully preserved streets, one can imagine the excitement that must have filled the city when the Games were held, and those who want to gain a greater appreciation of what life was like back then should head to the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, which is full of fascinating artefacts.
