Cruising to Komodo Island

Komodo Island is not only one of the most beautiful places on Earth, it's also among the most fascinating, with some truly unique wildlife that attracts huge numbers of visitors each year. The most spectacular and intriguing of the island's residents is of course the komodo dragon after which it is named, although there's much more to do here besides look at reptiles.

Naturally, anyone who visits this Indonesian isle - which forms part of the Komodo National Park - will want to see the dragons. Reaching a length of up to three metres, this is world's largest lizard, as well as one of the rarest and most intriguing.

The Komodo National Park was set up in the 1980s to protect the dragons, although in more recent years conservation work has been expanded to include the many other plants and animals that call this part of Indonesia home.

A large proportion of these can be found beneath the waves, where colourful coral reefs provide a habitat for huge numbers of colourful fish and other creatures of the deep. For this reason, Komodo Island has developed into one of the world's premier scuba diving sites, so if you've got an interest in marine biology you'll have loads of opportunities to see what lives beneath the surface of the ocean while you're here.
