Cruising to Koper, Slovenia

A clash of cultures

Slovenia's only commercial portside town of Koper is a place that defies categorisation. A clash of cultures exists here thanks to a complex history that has left its marks on the settlement.

First impressions of the slightly run-down harbour are misleading - there is plenty to enjoy here and restoration work is slowly getting underway, meaning that a better seafront is steadily emerging.

You'll want to spend most of your time in Koper's atmospheric Old Town, which has a lot of influence from neighbouring Italy since the town was once attached to Venice. The architecture is therefore intricate and unquestionably Italian.

Among the must-visit locations, the Cathedral of the Assumption stands out particularly, as does the Praetorian Palace which dates all the way back to the 15th century.

Popping into a restaurant or a cafe, you'll find it's not just the cuisine that benefits from the cultural fusion but also the languages - you may hear Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian and Italian spoken at any point.
