Cruising to Korcula

Home to some of Croatia's most picturesque beaches, the island of Korcula sits just off the coast of the mainland, surrounded by the sparkling waters of the Adriatic, and is a paradise for beach lovers and culture vultures alike.

Sunbathing, swimming and a range of aquatic pursuits such as kayaking and fishing are all popular here, although it's well worth travelling further inland to explore the town's history and heritage. This is something that will immediately jump out at you as you approach the island from the sea, as the ancient city walls which once provided a vital defensive barrier still stand imposingly around the Old Town.

Within the walls, you'll find the stunning St Mark's Cathedral, which was built in the 15th century and reflects the Gothic-Renaissance architectural style which was popular at the time. Elsewhere, the Marco Polo Museum contains artefacts which add weight to the claims that the famous explorer was in fact born in Korcula - something that has never actually been confirmed.

The area around the city is also known for its world-class wineries and olive groves, all of which help to supply local restaurants with the very finest ingredients while also adding a rustic charm to the landscape.
