Cruising to Mohacs, Hungary

Passing through Mohacs at any time other than just before Lent, you might never guess that this sleepy little portside town comes alive with music, dance and a carnival atmosphere during the annual Busójárás festival.
The streets of the Danube town are crowded with people wearing extravagant outfits and extraordinary masks during this very special event, so if you're lucky enough to be present for it, you certainly won't want to forget your camera.
But the place also has a very important significance in Hungarian history that is well worth experiencing. In the year of our lord 1526, the Mohacs battle occurred here - in which a ragtag Hungarian army was defeated by the Turks - and historians believe that it determined the fate of modern Hungary. For with the defeat came many years of partition and foreign domination.
Those wishing to soak up the history are encouraged to visit the extensive museum here and examine the memorial.
Last - but certainly not least - Mohacs is a great place to start exploring the Mohacs - Boly White Wine Route. Head to the visitors centre for a leaflet - it identifies a number of villages in the area where you can sample the local vine.
