MS Jane Austen
The five-star MS Jane Austen is sister ship to the MS Lord Byron and was freshly launched in 2015 by UK-based Riviera Travel. Money was no object in designing this innovative vessel, whose sleek exterior and stylish décor was inspired by the glamorous splendour of the golden age of luxury ocean liners.
MS Jane Austen has a maximum capacity of 140, meaning the onboard atmosphere is intimate but never crowded. 36 crew are on hand to provide the high level of attentive service that Riviera Travel passengers expect. Not only do MS Jane Austen’s passengers appreciate her brand new luxury interiors with a huge choice of vantage points, they’re also very interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of her varied European itineraries. MS Jane Austen passengers are predominantly British.
The main restaurant on the Ruby Deck is a classically stylish space with hand-crafted wood panelling, deep wool carpets and marble fixtures creating a luxurious effect. This is further enhanced by the gleaming glassware and premium china and table linen. Although the atmosphere is refined, the dress code is smart/casual rather than formal, and you can sit wherever you like at tables seating between four and six. The itinerary is always an inspiration for the imaginative menus.
A delicious four-course dinner is served every night, and the main restaurant also plays host to the hot and cold lunch buffet and breakfast buffet with egg station.
Another popular setting for a casual, al-fresco early bird breakfast, lunch or dinner is the Lido Bar & Restaurant on the Diamond Deck. You can book for lunch and dinner onboard.
Passengers who are celebrating a special occasion should make sure they are among the 24 guests who book a place at the Chef’s restaurant, which is transformed from the bar every evening. Fine local delicacies are served up alongside panoramic views.
Afternoon tea featuring the chef’s patisserie is a daily event, and complimentary tea and coffee are always available in the lounge. Weather permitting, barbeques are held on the Sun Deck and, unusually for a river cruise ship, passengers can also enjoy breakfast in bed.
The stunning panoramic Observation Lounge on the Diamond Deck features a marble-tiled bar, deep carpeting, atmospheric lighting and a great choice of leather armchairs or cosy sofas to relax in with a drink as you watch the world go by. Later on, you can take to the dance floor to the sound of live piano music. On warm evenings, the Lido Bar at the rear of the ship is the perfect spot for a sundowner.
The itinerary is often brought to life onboard with events like a live classic quartet recital. However the ship’s main social events are the Captain’s welcome and farewell gala dinners, which feature extended menus showcasing the cuisine of the itinerary. Many passengers enjoy dressing up for these occasions with men choosing to wear jacket and tie.
As well as watching the scenery from a sunlounger, you can also play giant chess, play a round on the putting green or take a dip in the splash pool on the Sun Deck, before ordering a drink from the bar.
There’s a small boutique for essentials, and the nightly newsletter will inform you about the next day’s schedules. Offshore excursions are conducted by knowledgeable English-speaking guides with a great balance between town and rural and culture and history.
MS Jane Austen’s cabins are tastefully decorated in neutral tones. There are 62 Standard Cabins across the three decks with an area of 161 sq. ft. The Standard Cabins on the Diamond and Ruby Decks feature French balconies. On the lower Emerald Deck these are replaced by picture windows.
The ship’s four 242 sq. ft. Deluxe Suites are located on the upper Diamond Deck. These boast bathrobes and slippers and plenty of extra living space. Seven more 199 sq. ft. Suites are spread over all three decks.
All cabins have hotel-style beds, air conditioning, hairdryer, flat screen TV, minibar, phone and safe as standard. A nightly turn down service and in-cabin tea and coffee making facilities add to the feeling of comfort.
MS Jane Austen has a purpose-built spa with sauna and steam room that you can reserve for your own private use. There is also an onboard hairdresser. The Diamond and Ruby Decks are connected by a glass lift for passengers’ convenience.
MS Jane Austen’s adventures take her all over Europe. Her five eight-day itineraries are Bruges, Medieval Flanders, Amsterdam & the Dutch Bulbfields River Cruise, The Blue Danube River Cruise, Rhine & Moselle River Cruise, Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg River Cruise and Rhine Cruise to Switzerland which can be extended with a three day voyage on the Glacier Express.
