Family cruise liners don’t come much better than the ms Maasdam, one of the jewels in the crown of the Holland America Line. With a little something for everyone, adults and children alike, this great value cruise is ideal for exploring destinations such as Canada, New England and even the Caribbean.
The ms Maasdam, named after the river Maas, is the ultimate ship for lovers of art and photography. As well as the magnificent Luciano Vistosi sculpture made up of 2,000 pieces of glass waiting to greet guests as they step into the Atrium, ms Maasdam offers passengers the chance to discover abstract murals painted especially for the luxurious Rotterdam dining room. However, art aboard the ship is not simply a spectacle to be observed, as guests are actively encouraged to get involved – the exclusive on board Digital Workshop, presented by Windows, gives guests the opportunity to learn from Microsoft trained “techsperts” who will teach them the finer points of taking photos, creating films and compiling digital photo albums.
Children of all ages are welcome aboard the ms Maasdam and there are a number of separate facilities geared towards different age groups. Club Hal offers a superior kids club experience supervised by full time directors and qualified staff, with a playroom filled with activities for ages 3-7. Older children in the 8-12 bracket have their own area with arcade games and Sony Playstation, while teenagers can take advantage of The Loft and The Oasis containing lounges, internet access and an exclusive sundeck with its own waterfall!
Those with an interest in fine dining will be in their element aboard the ms Maasdam, as the ship offers no less than five different restaurants with a variety of dishes served in each. For the ultimate dining experience, guests should head to the Rotterdam Dining Room for a five course meal guaranteed to tickle the taste buds.
The Pinnacle Grill is another fantastic option, this time for lovers of traditional barbecues and, of course, steak!
Possibly one of the most exciting and innovative features of the ms Maasdam is the Culinary Arts Café which, presented by Food & Wine magazine, acts as a demonstration kitchen. Guests can observe top chefs in gourmet food presentations or even try their hand at a little preparation of their own during an intimate cooking class. Not every ship offers the chance to learn a new skill whilst sampling a variety of different cuisines, making the ms Maasdam truly special!
As with all Holland America Line ships, the entertainment options on ms Maasdam are all of a very high quality. By night, the panoramic viewpoint known as the Crow’s Nest comes alive as a lively club whilst down below the Wajang Theatre hosts Las Vegas style shows and the croupiers at the casino allow guests to try their luck against the house.
During the day, guests truly are spoilt for choice when it comes to relaxing ways to pass the time. The Greenhouse spa and salon offers a multitude of pampering options, with the high number of treatment rooms ensuring there is plenty of room for everyone. After a massage or facial, guests can repair to the Jacuzzi, hot tub, sauna or one of two large pools to soak away any remaining stress – or even engage in a game of tennis, basketball or volleyball as the mood suits!
