The MS Zuiderdam is one of Holland America’s Vista class cruises, so-called because glass is used extensively in the structure of the ship—providing ocean views to 85% of her staterooms, and verandas to two-thirds of them. This is one of the unique touches that make the MS Zuiderdam a fantastic ocean-going home away from home as she travels through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal between October and April, and the Alaskan coast between May and September.

Holland America ships are famous for, among other things, their fabulous art collections, and the art on board the MS Zuiderdam includes some stunning works. Among the most notable is an Andy Warhol painting of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, part of a series created in 1985. There’s also the dazzling Waterford crystal seahorse located in the ship’s main atrium, and a series of large and intricate medallion pieces designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as an extensive array of paintings and antiques, from Art Deco to Commedia dell’Arte. To fully appreciate the magnificent collection, travellers on board the ship can take a self-guided walking tour, with a downloadable narrative that’s packed with information about the pieces and the artists.

There are plenty of opportunities for relaxing by the water, at the Aft pool, the Lido pool and bar, or at the luxurious indoor hydropool, and it’s easy to keep up with exercise in the ship’s well-appointed gym. For the younger crowd, there’s Club HAL, with supervised activities for children, and The Loft, a game room-style hangout for teens aged 13 to 18.

The Lido Restaurant and the Explorations Café are your go-to for daytime dining. The Lido is great for a casual and relaxed dining experience, and fresh, great-tasting food any time of day, and Explorations is your internet café and library at sea. The Vista Dining Room provides the perfect casual dining experience, with five-course meal options and wine list.

Canaletto Restaurant is the place to go for fabulous Italian cuisine in an intimate bistro-style atmosphere, with fresh antipasti and a traditional menu of Italian favourites, along with a great selection of wines and cocktails.

If you’re travelling on board the MS Zuiderdam, be sure to book an evening meal at the Pinnacle Grill, a chic and stylish dining venue with a sophisticated beef and seafood menu. This is truly the pinnacle of dining, with a fantastic array of excellent wines, and luxurious china, stemware, and linens to complete your experience.

You’ll love spending time by the pool during the day, but there are definitely plenty of other options. Try your hand at gourmet cooking with lessons or demonstrations at the Culinary Arts Centre, or visit the Digital Workshop, for help and advice on sharing your digital photos and video clips with friends and family.

For a little bit of onboard luxury there’s the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, offering hot stone massage, beauty treatments, hair and nail services, and an amazing thermal suite that provides the most lavish and relaxing sauna experience ever.

In the evenings you have your pick of entertainment, with the Vista Show Lounge for everything from Vegas to Broadway, magic and illusion, comedy, and variety acts. There are several bars on board, with music at B.B. King’s Blues Club and the Piano Bar, and late-night dancing at the Crow’s Nest.
