Cruising to Port Canaveral

Sun, sea, sand and spaceships

Cape Canaveral is best known for being mankind's launchpad to the stars, with NASA's Kennedy Space Centre providing the start point for our species' greatest adventures. However, you don't have to be an astronaut to enjoy this beautiful tropical destination, and dropping by on a cruise ship can be just as rewarding as taking off in a rocket.

Lying on Florida's so-called Space Coast, Cape Canaveral proper sits to the south of the Kennedy Space Centre, which is located on a nature reserve on Merritt Island. The town itself is also surrounded by several stunning beaches, with the entire area being known as the Canaveral National Seashore.

Aside from space exploration, the region is known for offering some of the best water sports and wildlife-themed attractions in Florida, with activities like kayaking, fishing and much more being particularly popular. Perhaps the best beach in the area is Cocoa Beach, which has a reputation as one of the surfing capitals of the US. Cocoa Beach Pier, in particular, holds legendary status as a hangout for professional surfers, and several of the most celebrated competitors in the sport's history have come from the area - including 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater.

What makes the beaches of Cape Canaveral so unique, however, is that they are probably the only places in the world where you can sunbathe by the sea while also watching a rocket launch at the same time.

If you'd rather get a little closer to nature, there are also plenty of opportunities for encountering some of the local wildlife, with Merritt Island itself being a particularly good place to head to. The nature reserve here is home to all manner of Floridian creatures, with manatees, sea turtles, alligators and bald eagles among the animals that you can see here. This part of the coast is also excellent for spotting dolphins jumping out of the waves.
