The Hermitage is a haven for art collections from iconic artists such as Picasso, Matisse and more. The city of St Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. The architecture in St Petersburg is inspired by London, Vienna and Paris and has similarities to the romantic city of Venice with its canals and bridges, wonderful for taking a stroll down and whiling away an afternoon taking in the scenery. The beautiful buildings are all as they originally were as St Petersburg was one of the few places not conquered during World War II so remains in its intended state. Most ships offer the opportunity of an overnight stay on board in St Petersburg, allowing more time to explore the region as well as the beautiful countryside outside the city.

The summer months are from June to September where it is warm and comfortable for sitting on a bench by the river or on a street café and watching the busy inhabitants go about their daily lives, whereas from November to March Russia tends to have extremely low temperatures.
