Sitting on the edge of the port, watching the activity and admiring the lighthouse, is a must-do activity here, before heading to a nearby restaurant for some much-needed Peruvian cuisine. But while the port is a joyous enough place to be, Salaverry really serves as a gateway to some of the most exciting ancient remains in the country. From the Luna Temple and its accompanying museum and archaeological site to the ruins of Chan Chan, this is a place you won't want to miss. It's not all dusty ancients though, and you'll find many tours round off nicely with a trip to the village of Huanchaco. This is an altogether different port to the one you arrived in aboard your cruise vessel - things carry on here much as they have done since man first arrived on the planet. With their little reed boats, the fishermen bring their catch ashore. Bliss.
