Cruising to Siem Reap

Siem Reap is the gateway to one of the world's most significant archaeological sites, with the Angkor Archaeological Park being home to the remains of several major cities from the Khmer Empire, which dominated this region of south-east Asia from the 9th to 15th centuries.

The most famous of these is of course Angkor Wat, which is the largest religious monument in the world and provides a fascinating insight into the history and spirituality of this part of Cambodia. Indeed, the very fact that it was first constructed as a Hindu temple and then later converted to Buddhism is representative of the religious and social development of the area over the centuries.

Other temples waiting to be discovered here include the likes of Angkor Thom and Wat Preah Prom Rath, while the Angkor National Museum contains some fantastic exhibitions that really bring the history and culture of the region to life.

Of course, if you feel like doing something other than exploring the magnificent ruins, you'll have a host of other activities to choose from, with traditional Cambodian cooking classes being highly popular here.
