Cruising to St. Nazaire

Sitting on the coast of Brittany in Northern France, Saint-Nazare has a long and distinguished maritime heritage, and is one of the country's most interesting seaside destinations. A great way to learn more about the city's history and traditions is to visit the Ecomusee, which can be found just outside the harbour, on the Loire Estuary.

Here, you'll be given a fascinating insight into Saint-Nazaire's development over the years, from its rise to become one of the most important transatlantic harbours during the 19th century, through to its destruction during World War II and subsequent rebuilding in the 1950s.

For those who want to get active, there are 170 km of bicycle tracks to explore in and around Saint-Nazaire, with the enormous Briere Regional Nature Park - which contains some stunning lakes and rivers, as well as several charming villages - located just outside the city itself.

Saint-Nazaire is also a great base for exploring the nearby city of Nantes, which is home to attractions like the Cathedrale Sain-Pierre, the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany and the Ile de Versailles - the latter of which boasts a picturesque Japanese garden.
