Cruising to Tortola

Measuring just ten miles by three miles, Tortola is a small nugget of heaven in the middle of the Caribbean, and is a beach lover's paradise. As the capital of the British Virgin Islands, it's also got a fair bit of culture and history to offer too.

For example, the so-called African Church is thought to have been the first free black church in the Americas, and was founded by slaves that had been freed by the Royal Navy and left on Tortola to set up their own community. Elsewhere, the Callwood Rum Distillery is the place to head to if you want to learn about the history and production of the Caribbean's favourite drink - not to mention try a few samples as well.

However, the main attraction of Tortola is of course the island's coastline, which boasts some of the finest beaches in the world. Among the most popular is Cane Garden Bay, which is also the most developed, with plenty of bars and restaurants to be found close to the waterfront.

For something a little quieter, Smuggler's Cove can be found at the island's western tip and is about as close as you're ever likely to get to heaven on earth.
