Trabzon, Turkey

Cruising to Trabzon

During times of old, adventurer Marco Polo wrote of how the Turkish port city Trabzon was a major trade centre, bustling and exciting to the eye. Fast forward more than 760 years, and little has changed.

Surrounded by spectacular natural scenery that includes forests, mountains and lakes, you'd be forgiven for just watching the eye candy all day. But instead, attempt to delve into the history of this inspiring place and you will be rewarded for your efforts.

One of your first visits should be to the Sumela Monastery, a stunning rock-hewn construct perched atop a narrow ledge. First constructed in the 4th century, it has fallen to rubble many times but has always been restored.

The Aya Sofya Museum, which makes its home in a beautiful picturesque church, is also worth a visit if you're interested in finding out more about the region.

Finally, if you're brave enough, shed your clothes in a traditional Turkish bath. It doesn't get any better than this.
