Cruising to Trondheim

Once the northernmost trading post in Europe, Trondheim has played a key role in Norway's development since the city was founded more than a millennium ago. These days, it provides a fascinating window into the past while also blending in seamlessly with the majestic natural surroundings of the fjords of central Norway.

Dissected by the picturesque Nidelva River, the city centre is home to some stunning historic attractions, including the largest church in northern Europe, as well as a number of traditional wooden Norwegian mansions - one of which is the local residence of the royal family.

To learn more about the charming local culture, head to museums like the Trondelag Folkemuseum, where you'll find a number of artefacts depicting local life through the ages. Elsewhere, the Trondheim Science Museum provides a fascinating day out, and draws on the city's privileged position as the home of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

If visiting during the summer, it's possible to take a dip in the fjord to the east of the city, while winter is a great time to spend an afternoon skiing at the nearby Vassfjellet.
