Cruising in Turkey

Turkey is often quoted as the land where East meets West and the remarkable history of the country has left a legacy of incredible Palaces, Mosques and Byzantine churches. The ancient ruins of times gone by are scattered far and wide across the country, in fields bays and mountains and are a constant reminder of the turbulent past and the many different rulers who struggled for power and ownership over the years. Cruising to Turkey will invite you to experience all that Turkey encompasses: the history, culture, cuisine and incredible natural beauty of the landscape as you sail from the capital down the coast, passing beaches, bays and coves.

Istanbul is a truly fascinating port of call, severed by the Bosporus, with Europe to the west and Asia to the east. The huge and sprawling city sees ordinary daily life taking place alongside the sublime and the sacred. The Hagia Sophia Mosque, the Roman Hippodrome Ruins and the bustling Grand Bazaar all inhabit this lively and colourful city, with the call to prayer and the rush of traffic as the background sounds. This is a destination to be explored and enjoyed for its vibrant and exciting possibilities.

Izmir lies south of Istanbul, between the azure Aegean sea and the vast mountains behind. Another city with a turbulent past, Izmir’s history includes war, fire and earthquakes and rulers in the form of Romans, Arabs, Turks, Byzantines, Ottomans and Greeks. The whole city was razed and rebuilt and is now a large and busy shipping port, within easy reach of spectacular sights such as Ephesus, Pergamum and Asclepion. Just a little further down the coast is Kusadasi, an alternative port to Izmir for visiting Ephesus. It is smaller than Izmir but growing and expanding with the constant flow of visitors interested in the nearby enthralling ancient sites. If you do decide to remain in the port rather than take the excursions you will find plenty of hustle and bustle to watch while sipping a Turkish wine and savouring the fresh fish that is in abundance.

Turkey is fortunate to have a very long and hot summer so cruises to the Eastern Med can provide the sunshine that is the missing ingredient here in the UK. From early Spring to late Autumn the weather will be pleasant and the skies clear blue for your cruise to Turkey and beyond.
