The Land of Islands

Over 17,000 islands are bundled together to create the Republic of Indonesia. This is the largest Archipelago in the world, sprawling its way across three time zones. One of the only countries in the world that hasn’t been fully explored, this is one of Southeast Asia’s most enthralling destinations to discover.

From rice paddies and forests, to temples, mountains and beaches, an assortment natural wonders erupt from the sea to create these islands. A part of the Ring of Fire, Indonesia has the largest number of active volcanoes on earth, resulting in a uniquely mountainous landscape. Expect to see billowing smoke dramatically rising from peaks, surrounded by the lush green rice terraces and rainforests: the perfect backdrop for adventure.

From tiny specks in the ocean to some of the largest islands in the world, there’s plenty of choice for every kind of traveller. Bali is one of the most popular destinations of them all, despite its smaller size. This is a paradise that ticks every box: tropical yet luxurious, exotic and cultural in equal measure. Sparkling beaches with consistent surf appeals to the adventurous, while for those seeking relaxation, a massage on the beach and a saunter around local markets is perfection.

Due to its smaller size, you can easily drive around the island in a day, venturing away from the picture-perfect beaches, inland to the undulating mountains. Keep an eye out for monkeys swinging between the trees in the jungle as you head towards Ubud; sitting on the slopes of the central mountains, this town is filled with craft markets and Hindu temples at the heart of Balinese traditions.

Just east of Bali sits Lombok. Lesser known than its popular neighbour, Lombok is able to provide quieter beaches and remote coves brimming with snow white sand and achingly blue waters. Mighty waterfalls explode crystal water into deep pools below and quaint rural villages are alive with tribal culture and centuries-old traditions. Being less developed than Bali, Lombok’s local charm is more prevalent. Escape the crowds here and experience the idyllic surroundings in peace.

You might wonder what more there is to this cluster of islands than great landscapes and beaches, and the answer is plenty. Indonesia is home to some of the best dive sites in the world, with many of them still unexplored. Forget crowded reefs in better known spots; Indonesia is a diver’s paradise full of exotic fish in warm waters.

Witness the world’s most famous volcano, Krakatoa, which is still active and angrily rages between Sumatra and Java, or climb to the summit of Gunung Rinjani in Lombok, the second highest volcano in Indonesia. The cuisine is as explosive as the volcanic islands themselves, with curries rich in spices. The varied fare reflects the wide-ranging culture and traditions all over the country, taking elements of Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern cooking.

That blend of cuisine really epitomises the whole place; a mix of cultures, people, wildlife and landscapes of 17,000 different places all fuse together to make one extraordinary country.
