Cruising to Volos
While most people with an interest in ancient Greek history may think Athens is the only place in the country where they can get their fix of archaeological wonders, passing up the opportunity to visit Volos is in fact a major mistake. Indeed, the city is built atop what was once a major network of towns and settlements, and as such is home to some wonderful historical attractions, and provides a fascinating insight into what life was like thousands of years ago.
Perhaps the best place for an overall look at the region's significance during ancient times is the Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum of Volos, where visitors can learn all about some of the area's former residents, as well as the many myths and legends that were born here. For example, the old city of Iolkos - upon which Volos now stands - is said to be the birthplace of Jason, who famously travelled with the Argonauts to retrieve the Golden Fleece.
Dimini is another of the ancient cities that once occupied the land where Volos now stands, and a huge number of artefacts retrieved during excavation works can be seen at the Archaeological Site of Ancient Dimini.
