Cruising in
Western Mediterranean

Cruising to the Western Mediterranean is one of the most popular choices for first time cruisers and families in particular. It is almost on our doorstep, yet far enough away to be blessed with a much sunnier climate and a much longer summer.

For anyone wanting to avoid the hassle of flying, sailing to the Med couldn’t be easier. In the main, ex-UK cruises to the Med depart from Southampton and the usual length of the no-fly option is two weeks. It holds great appeal for many reasons, but the primary one is convenience. Your holiday starts the moment you get on board and as you sail south you can feel the temperature rise, day by day.

If you are short of holiday time then flying to the Mediterranean gets you straight to the heart of the sunshine. You can start your cruise from numerous ports, but the most popular starting points for a Western Med cruise include Barcelona, Malaga, Palma, Rome and Genoa. Flying gives the option of taking a shorter duration cruise, or you can still opt for two weeks, but you can rest assured that you will have lovely weather for the whole duration – perfect for sun seekers.

Itineraries for Western Mediterranean cruises do vary but many include at least some of the following ports if not all: Barcelona, Rome (from Civitavecchia), Florence and Pisa (from Livorno) and for sailings from the UK there is usually a stop at Gibraltar on the way home.

For first time cruisers these destinations include some of the best-loved sights in Europe and the joy of cruising allows you to visit them all in one holiday, in great comfort. Families love the Med because of the generous sunshine, the gentle seas, the plethora of exciting and accessible site-seeing and the beautiful child-friendly sandy beaches. Visiting three different countries, minimum, with small children would normally be too great a challenge, but with the children’s facilities on board and the limitless luggage allowance on ex-UK sailings it becomes achievable, and enjoyable!
