Cruising to Yangon, Myanmar

Colonial charm

The city of Yangon located in Myanmar remains the main economic hub of this unique country. An ongoing identity crisis - resulting from a recent name change - has done little to dampen the charm and wonderment of this fantastic place.

An amalgamation of British, Burmese, Chinese and Indian cultural influences, Yangon is an almost unique example of a colonial city. At times the city feels at odds with itself (the streets are bustling, yet some high rise buildings remain completely unoccupied since the 1990s).

But despite its so-called identity crisis, the population remains upbeat, and a friendly or even familial attitude towards strangers is common. Expect to be approached if you're wandering around with a map, looking lost. Climate-wise, there are three distinct seasons - it's rainy from June to October, winter from November to February and extremely hot from March to May. Winter is the most popular season to travel in since it is more bearable to be out and about, but whatever time of year you go, you're sure to have an incredible time.
