Home to the main port of the Shetland Islands, Lerwick is the only town in the area, and boasts perhaps an unexpected extensive range of activities and attractions to experience.
Over 100miles off the north coast of Scotland, Lerwick is in the east of the Shetland Islands. It is a truly beautiful part of the world, with traditional Scottish buildings, and the impeccable views that are associated with the Highlands.
It also has a remarkable history, having been founded in the 17th century for the use of Dutch herring fleets. From then on the region struggled, the surrounding hamlet having been demolished by the court of Scalloway (the largest of the Shetland islands) in 1615 and 1625. In 1673 the fort was burnt, and in 1702 set alight.
Elements of the interesting history can still be seen today; 18th century warehouses still stand, the original Hay’s Dock has been restored, and here the Shetland Museum and Archives can be found. In this attraction, visitors will find a fascinating array of collections, including documents pertaining to the history of the islands, early photographs, and artefacts from different periods of time.
If history is not your thing, why not spend the day biking on the North Sea cycle route, or sample some local beer at the brewery? Or for a calmer couple of hours, a simple walk along the harbour is a superb way to pass the time, thanks to the gorgeous view of impressive yachts and of course the scenery.
Don’t pass up the delicious food options in town. Love or hate Scottish fare, the surprising range of eateries cater for all tastes – from fresh fish and chips, to tasty steak dinners, to simple jacket potatoes and sandwiches.
